The UCSF Department of Surgery congratulates UCSF medical student Mary Kathryn (Katy) Abel, AB and Rita Mukhtar, MD on their respective research and mentorship awards presented at the 2020 Inquiry Symposium ceremony on April 29, 2020. Mary Kathryn (Katy) Abel, AB, an MD Candidate at UCSF (Class of 2021), was awarded the "Long-Term Deans Prize in Research and Scholarship" for her research project "Clinical Outcomes after Standard Interventions in Invasive Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast." Eva Gillis-Buck, UCSF School of Medicine Class of 2020 and incoming general surgery resident, was awarded the UCSF 2020 Long-Term Dean's Prize in Research.  The Long-Term Dean's Prize is available to all UCSF graduating medical students. Finalists were selected based on the submission of a one-page abstract, letter of nomination, and 5-minute presentation to the faculty review committee. Kirk Fergus, UCSF class of 2020, was awarded the 2020 Senior Medical Student Travel Award by the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS). This award is to recognize the outstanding research efforts by medical students who have demonstrated a strong interest in pursuing a career in surgery. Only six awards are given each year in recognition of their achievements and they are nominated by their faculty. Students are invited to next year's Academic Surgical Congress held in Orlando, FL. Iris Liu, BA, a second-year medical student at UCSF, won first place in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress, Basic Science Category for her poster "Deep Immune Profiling of High- vs. Low-Risk Early-State Lung Adenocarcinoma." The ACS Medical Student Program e-Poster Session included 48 medical students who presented their research in one of three categories: clinical research; basic science research; or outcomes, innovation, or education research. Simon N. Chu, M.S., a 4th Year UCSF medical student and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Fellow in the laboratory of Qizhi Tang, Ph.D., has been awarded the 2019 Association for Academic Surgery Outstanding Medical Student Award at the 14th Annual Academic Surgical Congress held in Houston, Texas on February 5-7, 2019. Chu is co-mentored by transplant surgeon Peter G. Stock, M.D., Ph.D. Chu is also a member of the PRIME Program in Medicine for the Urban Underserved. Simon N. Chu, M.S., has been awarded the 2018 Dean's Prize in Research and Scholarship by the UCSF School of Medicine for his molecular medicine research. Chu, a senior medical student in the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Fellow, will present his research on the immune response following transplantation in the HIV infected recipient at the upcoming 2018 Inquiry Symposium on Wed.
