Pat was born and raised on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He majored in Biology and English at Hamilton College, a small liberal arts school in upstate New York. After school, Pat worked at a biotech company in Boston for just under two years, which specialized in the detection of blood-borne markers for cancer diagnostics. Impressed by the profound importance of the vascular system in so many diseases, and invigorated by the research experience, Pat joined Dr. Rong Wang's vascular lab as a graduate student in the Biomedical Sciences program at UCSF in the summer of 2005. As an American Heart Association fellow, Pat's work has focused on the mechanism through which activated Notch4 causes arteriovenous malformations, specifically in the brain, where such devastating abnormalities are poorly understood, and lack effective therapies.
